Jaishankar is in Mozambique from April 13 to 15. During the transit, he briefly met with Ethiopia’s Deputy Prime Minister as well.
In Mozambique, Jaishankar was welcomed by Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Manuel Jose Goncalves. He also met with the President of the Assembly of the Republic, Esperança Bias, with whom he discussed counter-terrorism, disaster resilience and green growth. The minister said that he also reiterated India’s support for Mozambique’s sustainable development.
He visited the Shree Vishvambhar Mahadev Mandir in the capital city of Maputo before addressing a gathering at the reception hosted by High Commissioner. Speaking at the event, the foreign minister said that these days, India does not speak only for itself, but for the Global South. “Transformational changes are happening in an Atmanirbhar Bharat that is putting us on a different trajectory,” he added.
When asked if the BRICS alliance, comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, is looking at trading in its own currencies, the EAM said: “Trade settlement is something which different countries are discussing. It is not something we are discussing within the BRICS. Individual countries have different positions on this matter,” reported the news agency ANI.
